Janet Jackson
Janet brought attention to body modification, both positive and negative. Many people see the "wardrobe malfunction" as a stunt that ended in a whirlwind of negative publicity and censorship, but I see more than that. Janet brought the concept of a nipple shield (not just a nipple piercing, which is already risque) into the living rooms of millions of people. Her notorious nipple made body piercing a front-page topic, for better or worse, around the globe. Janet Jackson isn't a trendy teenage superstar, she's a mature woman with a successful music career -- and body modifications.

Has to go to Janet Jackson for providing the world with a shocking look at her pierced nipple that made it into just about everybody's inbox this year. Now I won't have to explain to my grandmother what a nipple shield is. Honorable mention goes to Justin Timberlake for his role in the incident.
