Voice your opinion: the Reader's Response section. Return to Round Table index

This year, the End of the Year Awards changed format, giving the readers a say in things! Readers nominated contenders for each award and the Round Table members selected their choices off of these nominations (Note: if there weren't many nominees, the Round Table members could choose their own award winner in the category). The format for the awards outcome is also slightly different, with only one comment for per category winner being published (Note: If an award winner does not have a comment, it is because the Round Table member choosing that winner didn't include a comment). Discovering the sites, publications, and people honored with these awards is like finding a goldmine...one finds a wealth of information and in some cases new friends. One also finds some very interesting and creative minds and tons of support in expressing their individuality. Congratulations to all of the winners. Hopefully next year's awards will see much more reader participation and the addition of sponsors for a prize drawing to help spark reader interest in make nominations. Below are the categories with description with the winner in larger bold letters and a Round Table member comment on the same row for each award:

Best Body Modification Television Show -- There is a returning award for the mainstream media coverage of the body modification world by non-bodyart focused outlets, but this category is for shows that focus on body modification. Consideration should go to shows as a whole that feature body modification. Shows like Taboo could be considered along with shows like Miami Ink while shows that have used body modification in passing, such as episodes of Prison Break, should not.

Miami Ink

former staff member of BME's QOD and current BME columnist, moderator of the BME mailing list, piercer at Cottage 13 in Hamilton. Interviewed on Modified Mind.

IAM Page: aesthete

While it's completely artificial, at least it sheds a decent light on tattooing. It only wins because "Inked" is the worst show I've ever seen, and I've never heard of "Taboo." I don't have cable. At least there are some good tattoo makers on Miami Ink. Oh, and that dude Carey Hart stole my girlfriend, Pink, so he can bite it.

Individual tattoo ink packets are definitely deserving of recognition in this category. This is certainly a step towards more disposable set ups for tattoo artists and certainly can help cross contamination issues as well as cut down on clutter and the periodic heart break/frustration of a bottle exploding or opening in your travels.

Innovation of the Year -- This one was inspired by a Round Table Member's Choice Award from last year. Consideration should be given to innovative new designs in jewelry, new modification procedures, etc.

Single Shots of ink from Intenze Ink, Tattoo Superstore, Mario Barth

Piercer of the Year -- Consideration should be given to a piercer whose work, bedside manner, etc have gone above and beyond. The nominee does not necessarily have to be someone who has done work on you, but rather someone whose work you admire and who you would recommend to anybody asking.

Samppa, MadMax Tattoo, Finland (now in London)

former staff member of BME's QOD.

IAM Page: saram

Samppa is always pushing the boundaries of the industry, and I think he challenges everyone to think outside the box. Whenever I see his work, especially the more unusual things he's done, I can't help but be awed and amazed. The industry wouldn't be where it is today without creative and innovative piercers... and we still need them as the industry evolves and grows.

Tom Renshaw, hands down one of the best tattoo artists I've ever seen, and one of the few I'd travel anywhere in the world either to or from to get work done by (and plan to).

Tattoo Artist of the Year -- Consideration should be given to a tattoo artist whose work, bedside manner, etc have gone above and beyond. The nominee does not necessarily have to be someone who has done work on you, but rather someone whose work you admire and who you would recommend to anybody asking.

Tom Renshaw, Eternal Tattoo, Clawson MI

Daniel DiMattia, Calypso Tattoo, Belgium

former staff member of BME's QOD.

IAM Page: saram

This was such a hard category to consider, because I admire some of the artists nominated as amazing people as well as amazing artists! I've chosen Daniel DiMattia because his work is so perfect... crisp and bold and fit to the bodies of his clients. It also carries a combination of traditional style and something that is uniquely Dan's -- I see one of his pieces and can usually identify it as a Daniel DiMattia original. When I am in Europe, I know I'll be headed his way!

Best Community Forum -- Consideration should be given to a BBS, newsgroup, chat room, etc. that has a great atmosphere...friendly, helpful, and interesting content. IAM is not being considered as a whole in this category...each forum on IAM is considered separately.

Suspension.Org Forums

IAM: Learning

former staff member of BME's QOD and current BME columnist, moderator of the BME mailing list, piercer at Cottage 13 in Hamilton. Interviewed on Modified Mind.

IAM Page: aesthete

I frequent IAM's "IAM: Learning" forum for piercers. It's good. There are a lot of great thinkers there, and we all bring something different to the table, so to speak.

With the creation of a dedicated website and forum system, Suspension.org offers suspension practitioners and enthusiasts an opportunity to share information and innovate together. The ability to communicate can only benefit the suspension community, as experts and non-experts alike weigh in on all sorts of topics.

Scar Wars was definitely the event of the year for me... and probably a strong contender (or the clear choice) for anyone who was able to make it to Philadelphia for it. This unique weekend offered the first (but not the last) opportunity for practitioners, clients, and enthusiasts to get together in one location and celebrate scarification. Artists worked together on fusion projects, shared and debated techniques, and executed some of the most extensive and amazing scarification pieces I have ever seen. It was also a terrific social opportunity, and I have no doubt that a lot of new friendships and collaborations were formed over the weekend.

Modified Event of the Year -- This award is for conventions, exhibits, performance-oriented shows etc. from the past year. Consideration should be given to events that have been big enough to draw attention even from people who did not attend.

Up And Coming Website -- This award is for the site that's made the biggest improvements, gained a major boost in its following or is brand new this year.

Needled.com

former staff member of BME's QOD.

IAM Page: saram

Blogging is BIG. There are blogs out there on everything, from celebrity fashion blunders to stuff piled onto peoples' cats. So why not a dedicated body modification blog? I am continuously delighted with Needled, which offers news, links, reviews, and more. I check in regularly to see what is featured now, and greatly enjoy the frequent updates. Three cheers to Marisa DiMattia for creating and maintaining such a wonderful site!

The one, the only... BME. No one does it better when it comes to collecting photographs and experiences from every country and every piercing. While other sites may offer specific features, I still consider BME to be my #1 resource for piercing information.

Best Piercing Website -- This award is for the site that has the best piercing related content, whether it be information, images, interviews, articles, etc.

I have no idea how Tattoos.com wasn't nominated.

former staff member of BME's QOD.

BME reigns supreme in the realm of extreme body modification. No one else can approach the sheer number and diversity of submissions sitting in the members-only sections of BME. And I'm not sure anyone will ever challenge that, either.

Best Extreme Website -- This award is for the site that has the best extreme related content, whether it be information, images, interviews, articles, etc.

BME

Best Body Jewelry Website -- This award should really be for the best Jewelry Supplier, as it is meant for the site/supplier with the best selection, service, quality, etc. and not necessarily the best website.

BodyArtForms

former staff member of BME's QOD.

IAM Page: saram

I shop regularly at BodyArtForms and love the selection and service. I enjoy shopping with a small business and don't mind waiting a little bit for a custom piece to be ordered for me. Their prices are competitive, the quality of most items is impeccable, and the turnaround time on in-stock items is extremely fast. The main factor in choosing this store as my favorite is reliability -- they are consistently great and I have had nothing but good experiences over years of ordering.

From what I've seen of Bellavendetta.com I've liked! I am admittedly not the pornography connoisseur that I could be but the website has a plethora of ladies and gentlemen in various stages of undress doing all sorts of things with, to, in, out and around each other, Covering anything and everything from food to blood to makeup to costumes to straight up girl on girl boy on boy girl and or boy on intimate object and so on. The site is artistic and well thought out, the models are real, the pictures are believable, fun and most importantly HOT.

Best Modified Porn Website -- This award is for the site that has the best porn content featuring modified models.

BME Hard

former staff member of BME's QOD.

IAM Page: saram

I feel like a broken record, but BME really delivers. BME Hard proves that no matter the kink, someone out there is into it (and willing to submit photographs). The galleries are hot and new photos are constantly being added. Best of all, it's not cheesy staged porn... these are real people, having a great time. What's not to love.

Website of the Year -- This is for the site that is considered the best overall, it can focus on all aspects of body modification or single out something specific.

BME

former staff member of BME's QOD and current BME columnist, moderator of the BME mailing list, piercer at Cottage 13 in Hamilton. Interviewed on Modified Mind.

IAM Page: aesthete

I have never been to needled.com, so BME gets my vote.

former staff member of BME's QOD and current BME columnist, moderator of the BME mailing list, piercer at Cottage 13 in Hamilton. Interviewed on Modified Mind.

IAM Page: aesthete

K.A. gets my vote. Yeah, it's a cliche because he's dead and all, but he was a real influence on me, and always - always - will be. I never knew him in person, but we had some fun conversations through email over the past six or seven years, and I miss him.

Modified Mind of the Year -- This is basically the "Person of the Year" award. This is for the person who has made the biggest contribution to the body modification community in the last year.

Keith Alexander

former staff member of BME's QOD.

IAM Page: saram

When I look back at 2005, the person who will always come to mind will be Keith Alexander. Ah, Keith. He made newbies on rec.arts.bodyart cry and had no trouble making friends and enemies everywhere he went. He proved that you can be a piercer, a teacher, Dee Snider's guitarist, and a highly successful businessman. Keith certainly had an impact on the body modification world, and things are a little emptier without him.

Round Table Member's Choice Award -- This is where the Round Table members get to honor whatever they want that they feel deserves recognition not covered by the current awards. In some cases, the categories the members come up with will become official awards next year.

I want to thank David Vidra and everybody at Health Educators for all of their hard work over the years. David has always been around, and hopefully always will be, and he's done more good for this industry than most practitioners could ever imagine. Thank you!
